Festival Parade Grand Marshall
Mr.
Willis Miller
“I tell my students at Liberty Union-Thurston
Elementary School that I’m the resident dinosaur” exclaims Mr. Willis
Miller. Mr. Miller started his
trek to becoming the “resident dinosaur” sixty years ago, in 1950, as a
middle school math teacher in Coshocton County after graduating from
Capital University with a major in math and education.
Born in 1928, Mr. Willis Miller was raised in a small
rural town called Mt Orab, just off the Appalachian Highway, in Brown
County, Ohio. After graduating
from high school in 1946, he attended Capital University in Columbus,
Ohio, since he was raised in a Lutheran environment. While attending Capital University he
was introduced to Carolyn, his future wife and Baltimore native, by a
mutual friend. On graduation day
in 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, the start of the Korean
War. Willis and Carolyn, a Liberty
Union High School Class of 1946 graduate, were married on December 24th,
1950, halfway through his first year of teaching in the Coshocton County
schools as a math teacher for grades 7, 8 and 9. Then, in 1951, it was off to Korea
serving with the US Army in a heavy artillery unit for two years.
After returning from Korea, Willis taught for two more
years, 1953-1955, in Coshocton County.
Then he spent two years, 1955-1957, teaching middle school math in
Zanesville. In 1957, Willis
accepted a teaching job at Sherman Middle School, one of the two new
middle schools in Lancaster that year, as a math teacher where he taught
until 1995. In 1996, Willis switched over from middle school math to
elementary school math in the Liberty Union-Thurston School
District. So, with the end of the
2009-2010 school year, that makes sixty years of teaching math.
Willis and Carolyn moved back into the Baltimore,
Ohio, area in 1959 and raised their two sons, David and Allen. About forty years ago, Willis developed
a love for bicycles, collecting antique bicycles and bicycle memorabilia. Willis has over 150 antique bicycles in
addition to the many he has donated to the Baltimore Museum where he has
served as a Board Member for over twenty years. His love for bicycles is much more
than just collecting and restoring.
He rides a bicycle just about everywhere, year round, including to
Liberty Union-Thurston Elementary School every day because “it is very
good for your health”. In addition
to collecting, Willis repairs bikes for kids when they come to his house,
at no charge.
A couple of years ago, an 8th Grader,
created a Facebook page to honor Willis – “I ♥ Mr.Miller!”. It
is not surprising that this man, with his years of teaching and sharing
his love for bicycles, has over 618 Facebook members and 600+
entries. If Mr. Willis Miller has
impacted your life, please take a minute to share it with the world by
visiting his Facebook page.
